Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., led a congressional delegation to Taiwan on Sunday.

It comes less than two weeks after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to the island elicited a vehement retaliation from China.

The five-person delegation will talk about security, trade, supply chains, and other topics.

Before leaving the island later that day, they will meet with President Tsai Ing-wen.

China has yet to comment on the current visit, but following Pelosi’s visit, Beijing launched the largest series of military exercises ever conducted around Taiwan.

On a daily basis, multiple Chinese planes breach the unofficial median line down the Taiwan Strait.

Although the United States has officially recognised Beijing, it has since become Taiwan’s main arms supplier and international supporter.
