The gun salute is a dramatic, centuries-old military salute or mark of respect in which guns or artillery are fired.

The occasion is significant because this year marks the 75th anniversary of India’s independence, as well as the first time an indigenously developed gun will be fired on the occasion.

The gun is the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS), which was created by the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO). The precise firing of 21 rounds at the same interval is a difficult task.

The ATAGS has a one-of-a-kind all-electric drive system, as well as the ability to fire six-round bursts of propellant up to Zone 7, generating pressures in the gun chamber that could blow up lesser barrels.

The gun is also very mobile in desert and mountainous terrains.
