British Government considers Swiss-style trade relationship with the EU

Rishi Sunak is looking into ways to remove many of the United Kingdom’s trade barriers with the European Union, including a potential Swiss-style relationship, which could enrage many on his Conservative Party’s right wing. Switzerland has access to the EU through a series of bilateral agreements, but that deal requires a more liberal attitude toward EU migration than the party’s hardline Brexit faction is willing to accept, according to the newspaper on Saturday.
When Frost and former Prime Minister Boris Johnson drafted the UK’s negotiating mandate in 2020, they ruled out such an approach. When Johnson was still prime minister, the UK began working on a new trade agreement with Switzerland in April 2022.
