Two incidents occurred at Codespaces, affecting multiple GitHub services

In June and July, Codespaces experienced two incidents that impacted multiple GitHub services.

Codespaces became unavailable in June due to problems encountered while migrating a DNS record to a new load balancer.

Alerting systems detected degraded availability for Codespaces in the United States’ West and East regions in July. Investigation is still going on regarding the contributing factors due to the recent nature of this incident and will provide a more detailed update on cause and remediation in the August Availability Report.

Customers who use a data migration service to migrate to GitHub.com are now receiving Service Unavailable errors.

This was caused by an overburdened proxy server that routes traffic to the database.

When hundreds of thousands of jobs made identical API requests, the proxy server was quickly overwhelmed.
