TikTok moderators claim they were shown videos of child sexual assault during training session

TikTok has outsourced much of its content moderation to third-party companies that hire employees to manually review videos that may violate the platforms’ graphic content policies.

Many of these content moderators have reported significant mental trauma and claim TikTok did not adequately prepare them for the job.

According to a TikTok spokesperson, the company’s training materials include textual descriptions but no visual examples of child sexual abuse material.

The company is required by law to report any CSAM discovered on its platforms to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Another contractor, Teleperformance, told Forbes that its “calibration tools” did not include explicit videos of child abuse.

Two people who spoke with Insider said they were diagnosed with PTSD as a result of their work as CSAM moderators.

The Verge reported in 2019 that after leaving their jobs as moderators for Facebook, some of them developed symptoms similar to post-traumatic stress disorder.
