Tesla supplier cautions of graphite supply risk in unregulated market

The unregulated market for the key battery material will restrict the supply of graphite in the coming decade. Bankers were hesitant to fund new projects due to the graphite market’s lack of transparency in pricing.
Other battery materials, such as lithium, nickel, and cobalt, are refined in China, but the raw minerals that feed those refineries come from all over the world.
Graphite demand is expected to triple in the next four years as electric vehicle sales soar. The anode of a battery, which is made of graphite plus a silicon additive, is more reliant on China than other materials.
Few analysts monitor the industry, and there is a lack of visibility on future projects, making long-term price forecasting difficult.
