There is a significant shortage of ex-servicemen in government departments and positions.

While the government has announced a 10% quota for ex-servicemen in the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), Ministry of Defence, and Defence Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), official data show a significant shortfall in the number of ex-servicemen recruited in government jobs compared to the vacancies reserved for them.

Ex-servicemen made up only 1.29 percent of the total strength in Group C and 2.66 percent in Group D across 34 of the 77 Central government departments that provided data to the DGR.

They are entitled to 10% of Group C posts and 20% of Group D posts, but they only account for 1.15 and 0.3 percent of the total.

Ex-servicemen are not being hired for government jobs because there aren’t enough qualified candidates, according to a meeting of senior civil servants last week. Ex-Servicemen totaled 26,39,020 as of June 30, 2021, including 22,93,378 from the Army, 1,38,108 from the Navy, and 2,07,534 from the Air Force.
