The Orion Nebula is 1,000 light-years away from Earth and was formed by jets of gas emitted by newborn stars.

This image depicts the nebula region containing the Herbig-Haro object HH 505, which is located on the outskirts of the Orion Nebula.

Astronomers can directly observe these high-energy outflows thanks to Hubble’s sensitivity to ultraviolet light.

The image shows bright shockwaves formed by outflows as well as slower moving stellar material currents.

This finding was part of a spellbinding Hubble mosaic of the Orion Nebula, which combined 520 ACS images in five different colours to create the sharpest view of the region ever taken.
