General Motors’ Cruise division has created its own chips for self-driving cars, which will be available by 2025.
Switching from Nvidia Corp’s products to customised chips, the company is taking a page from Tesla’s playbook.
Investments in in-house chip development were required, but these would be recouped by increasing production.
Personal ownership of self-driving vehicles would be possible from that point forward.
The company is collaborating with an unidentified Asian chip maker to mass-produce its custom chips.
This comes after GM CEO Mary Barra stated that the company would develop a “personal autonomous vehicle” by the middle of the decade.
