GitHub’s new privacy policy sparks controversy

This month, GitHub announced that it would begin using “non-essential cookies” on some marketing web pages in September.

Such cookies can make determining a user’s browsing history and behaviour across multiple sites simple, potentially allowing malicious actors to track this activity.

Users were outraged by GitHub’s new policy wording, with some even considering switching to GitLab.

GitHub privacy policy update sparks backlash over tracking cookies, resulting in over 1,200 community dislikes.

Some even created a change.org petition, claiming that the new policy wording was “less transparent,” and urging GitHub to discontinue all marketing cookies.
