False copyright infringement emails download and install LockBit ransomware

LockBit affiliates are employing an intriguing ruse to infect people’s devices by disguising their malware as copyright claims.

These emails threaten legal action if the recipient does not remove the infringing content from their websites.

The emails do not specify which files were improperly used in the body, instead instructing the recipient to open the attached file to view the infringing content.

LockBit 2.0 has risen to the top of Intel 471’s list of the most prolific ransomware operations in Q4 2021.

This confirms previous studies’ findings and solidifies the group’s status as a widespread threat.
