According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), a hole in the sun’s outer atmosphere could cause a “extreme solar storm” on Wednesday, August 3.

A storm of this magnitude could cause spacecraft to lose power, radio signals to be disrupted, and satellite navigation to be temporarily disabled.

Extreme solar storms of this type are uncommon, occurring only four days out of every 11-year cycle.
