Dell launches CAMM to replace SODIMM

The next generation of DDR memory being developed by Dell to replace SODIMM in laptops, Compression Attached Memory Module (CAMM), was first leaked in 2022.

JEDEC is currently developing a new specification to replace the fundamental SO-DIMMs that have been in use for 25 years. To overcome bandwidth constraints, Dell’s CAMM DRAM employs a compression connection.

Traditional SODIMM layouts require extensive routing traces. Higher capacity modules have already demonstrated the benefits.

CAMM’s advantages in terms of footprint and performance may already be seen at the high end.
