China summons a Canadian diplomat in response to a G7 statement on Taiwan

China’s foreign ministry said on Friday that it summoned Canadian diplomat Jim Nickel in Beijing over Canada’s participation in a statement issued by the Group of Seven (G7) nations’ foreign ministers.

This is the latest in a series of diplomatic complaints issued by Beijing following the G7’s call on China on Wednesday to resolve tensions in the Taiwan Strait peacefully.

According to a Chinese foreign ministry statement released on Friday, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Xie Feng summoned Nickel on Thursday and urged Canada to “immediately correct its mistakes” on the issue of Taiwan or “bear all consequences.”
